Exploring Innovation: Our Visit to the Diabetes Research Institute
At Touched by Type 1, we recently had the honor of visiting the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) in Miami, Florida, an institution that has long been at the forefront of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) research. Our visit was not only enlightening but also reaffirmed our commitment to supporting diabetes research and the tireless work being done to improve the lives of those with Type 1.
The DRI Legacy: A Focused Commitment to Curing Diabetes
Founded in 1971, the Diabetes Research Institute was created with a singular mission: to find a cure for diabetes. Over the past five decades, the DRI has become one of the world’s leading research institutions dedicated to diabetes. Operating as a Center of Excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the DRI combines advanced clinical and basic research, bringing together some of the brightest minds in the field of medicine, immunology, and biotechnology.
The DRI’s primary focus is not just to manage diabetes but to cure it. A cure would mean: The ability to restore natural insulin production and normalize blood sugar levels without imposing other risks. Their approach integrates the latest scientific discoveries in areas such as islet cell transplantation, immune modulation, and genetic research. Through collaboration across disciplines, the DRI aims to translate these innovations into practical, life-changing therapies for those living with Type 1 Diabetes.
Their innovative work, backed by decades of research, has led to some of the most promising advancements in the field, including experimental treatments that aim to restore natural insulin production and halt the progression of the disease. The team at DRI understands that a cure is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and their multidisciplinary approach is geared toward finding personalized treatments that address the unique challenges faced by those with T1D.
Hands-On Work at DRI: Making Strides
During our visit, we had the privilege of working alongside the incredible team at DRI, where we gained firsthand insight into the groundbreaking research and clinical trials taking place. We were fortunate to be guided through this experience by experts who are leading the charge in diabetes innovation.
Chris Fraker, Ph.D.
Dr. Chris Fraker is a Research Assistant Professor at the Diabetes Research Institute, specializing in biomedical and tissue engineering. As both a researcher and type 1 diabetes patient, he is dedicated to developing new ways to protect transplanted cells and advance cure-focused therapies.
Midhat Abdulreda, Ph.D.
Dr. Midhat Abdulreda is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Diabetes Research Institute, where he studies immune responses in diabetes and transplantation. His groundbreaking “living window” model allows real-time observation of transplanted cells inside the body.
Norma Kenyon, Ph.D.
Dr. Norma Kenyon is Vice Provost for Innovation at the University of Miami and a leader at the Diabetes Research Institute. Her research aims to make islet cell transplantation a reality for people with type 1 diabetes — without the need for lifelong anti-rejection drugs.
Camillo Ricordi, M.D.
Dr. Camillo Ricordi is a world-renowned diabetes researcher and the inventor of the method used globally to isolate insulin-producing cells. He leads innovative projects in cell therapies, bioengineering, and regenerative medicine to advance cures for diabetes and other diseases.
A Day to Remember: Collaboration and Education
At Touched by Type 1, we believe that education, community, and collaboration are key to advancing the field of T1D care. Our visit to DRI reaffirmed the power of partnerships between researchers, healthcare providers, and those who live with Type 1 Diabetes. The passion and dedication of the DRI team was palpable, and it was inspiring to see how each person involved is contributing to the goal of a diabetes-free future.
We look forward to continuing our support for diabetes research and staying connected with the outstanding teams at institutions like DRI. Together, we can make significant strides toward changing the lives of millions living with diabetes.
💜 A heartfelt thank you to the entire DRI team for their time, knowledge, and hospitality. We are inspired by your unwavering commitment to finding a cure for diabetes, and we are honored to be part of this shared mission.
